Songs of Fire & Ice
Concert: Saturday 8th October 2005, 7.30pm to 10pm
Carolyn Hillyer and Nigel Shaw, internationally known musicians and artists

The ancient landscapes of Dartmoor inspire these two musicians. They will be performing a new programme of music that includes work from their two new albums, Dartmoor Roundhouse and Ice: The Cold Songs

Pure flute songs played on thirteen wooden flutes carved by Nigel from native trees and created around an ancient neolithic hearth fire, combine with a cycle of songs and chants written by Carolyn who draws on a distant root that connects our land to a primordial memory of ice.

Carolyn and Nigel have performed concerts in many parts of the world including Russia, USA, Australia, Japan, the Baltic and throughout Europe. They combine a variety of traditional and ancient instruments (including bagpipes, bone and clay whistles, Irish whistles, frame drums, rattles and piano) with natural sound recordings and ambient atmospheres. Their songs and music describe a deep sacred relationship with nature, the ancient land and ancestral roots.

In Dartmoor Roundhouse Nigel features ancient flute songs recorded with instruments that he carved from the wood of indigenous trees. Each flute has its own voice within the grain of the wood. He is a long-established composer and musician, using many different ancient and contemporary instruments in his work, including keyboards, small pipes, drums, Irish whistles, Slovakian fujara and wooden flutes.

The Cold Songs album was created and partly recorded during Carolyn’s recent journeys to the Arctic. It is a cycle of chants and songs drawn from a very ancient root that connects our own land to a primordial memory of ice. The Cold Songs describe a dark earth mystery that has passed through a thousand generations of women, using simple and traditional instruments including reindeer, copper and salmon drums made by Carolyn.
