TRANSITION ISLAND ROADSHOW

Community

Is poverty inevitable?
Should we be considering making the best of a very difficult situation?

People are not interested!
Too far into the future.

Some people rich!
So they will buy their way out of problems.

But we need to set something up and get it rolling.

Advertising essential -
Beacon & County Press

Does it need another name?
What does ‘transition town’ mean!?

Relate CC & PO to people
'how does it affect me?'

Mass extinctions and/or mass wars?
Will the Island defend itself against incomers?
Will the Island become polarised?

Are we to blame?

We need to care for everyone within the community –
Make sure everyone has the minimum.

We need to become a self-less society -
Encourage people to see that sharing is a happy situation / state of being.

We need to encourage our children to see the value in simple things and that commercialisation doesn’t work (longterm)

We need open green space areas.

How do we define “what is enough”?

Green Power

Why do Islanders keep refusing wind turbines?
NIMBY / reducing house values.
Denial that there is a problem?

Where is the best place on the Island to put them?
Offshore – south coast

International cooperation -
How are we going to achieve energy / CO2 balance?

What are we going to do about China / India -
we want their cheap goods but not the pollution created

Renewable energies built into new houses
Support for private householders

Seek realistic projections of need.
Consider how to meet it  -  biofuels?
Alternative land use?

Transport

Return to horses – busses & trams

Car Sharing –
spreading the cost to allow paying for busses

Useful to carry big/heavy loads
If you don’t own a car and chose to use a bus.

Sail power useful?
Sail taxis – use Medina for Cowes – Newport travel.

Cycle track – how to improve use
Needs better surface, better access, second track on the road

Car-free town centre in Cowes?

Cheap busses – or better free busses like some European cities.
